Born in 1942 in Gölcük, Erden Kıral graduated from National Fine Arts Academy Ceramics Department. He started his cinema career by assisting Osman F. Seden. He made a name for himself in 1978 with the film Kanal starring Tarık Akan which portrayed the order of the lords of rice paddies. He shot Bereketli Topraklar Üzerinde in 1980, an adaptation of Orhan Kemal’s novel of the same name covering the challenging lives of landless villagers living on fertile lands. The film itself also faced a challenging existence. It was censored, and banned during martial law. A copy was smuggled abroad. Starring Erkan Yücel, Tuncel Kurtiz, Yaman Okay and Nur Sürer along with the working public, it finally met its audience in Turkey in 2008, 28 years later.

In 1983, he portrayed Ferit Edgü’s poetic novel “O” on the silver screen as Hakkari’de Bir Mevsim with a screenplay written by Onat Kutlar. This film, covering the life of a young teacher exiled to a border village in Hakkari was also censored. It remained banned in Turkey for a period. The film attained multiple awards from international festivals, including the Silver Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival, and was screened in Europe, America, and Japan.

Stating that he is heavily influenced by third cinema and producing social realist films also retains his surrealism and considers surrealism as a method of revealing the truth. In 1984 he filmed Ayna, starring Nur Sürer, in which reality and dream are intertwined. The dreams of Zelihan guide us through the truth. The film was nominated for a Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, and received multiple awards from national and international festivals.

He represented Turkey at the Berlin Film Festival in 1988 with his film Av Zamanı. He shot the autobiographic film of The Halicarnassus Fisherman portraying his days of exile in Bodrum under the title Mavi Sürgün (Blue Exile) in 1993. He was the Oscar nominee for Turkey with this film. He was invited to multiple national and international festivals and received many awards with his later films Avcı (1999), Yolda (2005), Vicdan (2008), Yük (2013), and Gece (2014).

Erden Kıral’s contributions to cinema are not limited to his films. He contributes on a theoretical basis through his editorial roles in the publications of Çağdaş Sinema, Gerçek Sinema, and Güney. In an interview he stated “if a country lacks a serious cinema publication, that means they lack any serious cinema”. He is a founding member of Sinebir, and served as the chairman to the Turkish Cinema Council. He is a member of the Berlin Art Academy and a founder of the cinema department. In 2012, he published his book Aynada Yansıyan Hatıralar, in which he shares his life story, memories, and everything he lived through in the name of cinema.

Founded in 1964 by Ertem Eğilmez and Nahit Ataman, Arzu Film had its most popular period between 1964-1989. It was the production company of the films usually directed by Ertem Eğilmez and Kartal Tibet. Identified with screenwriter, producer and director Ertem Eğilmez (1929-1989), Arzu Film has produced many unforgettable films of Yeşilçam (Green Pine Cinema).

Through Arzu Film, Ertem Eğilmez enabled actors such as Kemal Sunal, Münir Özkul, Adile Naşit, Şener Şen, Halit Akçatepe, Ayşen Gruda, Zeki Alasya, Metin Akpınar, İlyas Salman and directors such as Yavuz Turgul and Sinan Çetin to be recognized and adopted in Turkish cinema. Eğilmez, who created his own style in Turkish cinema with comedies with a crowded cast consisting mostly of the same actors, blended love, friendship, brotherhood and current social events with the comedy element in his films. These films brought with them the development of a school called \"Arzu Film Comedies\" in Turkish cinema. Arzu Film has produced films where love prevails despite class differences and goodness and sincerity win. These films, which include the importance of human values, have established a connection with the public and won the appreciation of it. The production company, which introduces its films as \"Arzu Film Proudly Presents\", is still remembered with the films watched over the years.

Tatli Dillim (1972), Sev Kardesim (1972), My Dear Brother (1973), The Blue Bead (1974), Salako (1974), From the Village to the City (1974), adapted from Rıfat Ilgaz's novel with the same name and first shot in 1975 The Chaos Class series, Süt Kardesler (1976), Aile Serefi (1976), Saban, Son of Saban (1977), Smiling Eyes (1977), Kibar Feyzo (1978), Neseli Gunler (1978), Banker Bilo (1980), The Honest One (1984), Arabesk (1988) are among its most important films. Arzu Film continued to produce films after Ertem Eğilmez's death. Kahpe Bizans (1999), Hemso (2000), The Masked Gang series that started in 2005, and the new The Chaos Class series are the latest films produced by Arzu Film.
